What to Expect While Getting Your CDL

C.R. England’s Premier Truck Driving Schools emphasize hands-on learning, so expect to spend most of your time working behind the wheel and directly with a rig. The courses are designed for efficiency to get you on the road with the knowledge you need quickly, and you can complete them in as little as 17 days. The class is broken into two sections, followed by two training period phases.

Your First Week:

As a student, you will start your first week by completing administrative requirements such as on-boarding and paperwork, a physical, and a drug test. You will also meet the school staff, including your instructors, learn about safety protocols, and how to operate a truck.  You will primarily be in a classroom environment, learning and studying the appropriate material to help you pass the written permit test before getting on the truck and learning about its functions.

If you already have your permit, you will start your first week by completing administrative requirements and then you will get on the truck, learn about its functions, and begin to learn how to drive that big rig.

Second Week:

(First Week for Permit Holders)

Now the real fun begins. You get to operate the truck and learn the fundamentals of safely driving that big rig to prepare you to take the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)/Skills Test, including these maneuvers and skills:

  • Pre-Trip Inspection: Learn how to properly perform a pre-trip inspection to ensure everything is safely functioning on the truck and to help you prepare for your trip ahead.
  • Backing: Straight line, offset, parallel, and in some cases, alley dock
  • Road and traffic driving

Third Week:

Your third week will comprise of practice and more practice! You will be preparing for the skills testing to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License. This can begin late in the second week or at the beginning of the third week. Per Federal and State regulations, there is a 14 day waiting period from the date you got your permit before testing is allowed. This ensures that you get plenty of practice time in so that you can be confident in taking your test and driving out on the road.

Welcome to C.R. England!

Congratulations on finishing school and earning your CDL! You are now officially a driver for C.R. England. Continue to see your next steps as you move on up in the company with more driving opportunities and positions.

What's Next?

You practiced, you studied hard, and passed the CDL test, so now what? Your career can now begin. You will attend orientation and be hired on as a C.R. England team member. You will learn about the company and where you can take your career. You’ll be introduced and encouraged to begin exploring CareerTrak, a program within our driver mobile app, CRE Toolbox. This allows you to apply for jobs you’re interested in and get placed into a career that makes you successful.

Phase 1

After orientation, you will work with a Training Coordinator to get placed on a truck with a C.R. England Driver Trainer. This is where you will learn about the business, deliver loads, and gain experience behind the wheel. You will start earning a paycheck as you are training and will train for up to 150 hours.

C.R. England wants to make sure you are getting paid during this time of training and offers an availability pay guarantee of $560 a week. To be eligible, you must be on a truck or available to drive all days during the pay period. Most trainees will make more than this, but we want to make sure you are being compensated while you are learning the ins and outs of truck driving.

Phase 2

After you have completed your 150 hours of driving with a trainer, you will move on to Phase 2 where you train with a partner who has also completed their 180 hours.

You will continue to run routes with your colleague as you find your desired position through our CareerTrak network or 150 days/5 months from upgrade. A recruiter will contact you as soon as that position opens up. If you can’t land your desired position quickly, you can still earn up to three pay raises during Phase 2 over the first six months you drive for C.R. England.

These payments will start approximately 3 weeks after your hire date.

Upon completion of the 12-months, you will have only paid $1860 [$1395 for Veterans] of the $5995. The remaining balance will be paid by C.R.
